Food allergies are an abnormal reaction of the immune system to food. This immune reaction can be severe or mild. Food intolerance causes uncomfortable gastrointestinal symptoms (bloating, gas, stomach cramps), which has nothing to do with the immune system.

Once you have identified an allergic reaction to a food, you should avoid it. If you have allergies, you should read the labels on all the prepared foods you eat. Your doctor can help you learn how to avoid erroneous foods that cause allergies.

If your child is allergic to food, give your school or caregivers instructions and a list of foods to avoid. Tell them what they should do if they eat the allergen by mistake. There is no cure for food allergies.

The cure for the food allergies:

There is no cure for food allergies. Your doctor will give you antihistamines and oral or topical steroids if you have a mild allergic reaction (itching, sneezing, urticaria, or rash). The most severe allergy is treated with a drug called epinephrine (nor-epinephrine).

This medicine should be given quickly to save your life. If you or your child are very sensitive, the doctor may prescribe a prescription for the epinephrine pen that you carry with you at all times. Your doctor should tell you how and when to inject yourself with a pen.

Anyone with an allergic reaction should be transported by ambulance to the emergency room because the amount of adrenaline pumped into the body can be dangerous. Your doctor can give medicines to help slow blood circulation, breathing, and metabolism.

Living with a food allergy

Living with food allergies can cause fear and anxiety when eating in a restaurant or in someone else's home. You will always wonder if your food problem is associated with the meal or not. Also, if you have a food allergy to most of the eight common foods, you may be frustrated by the limitations of eating these foods.
